Current Project:  Design and test new lubricants in ultra high vacuum (UHV) environments


Project Description:


Lubrication application between moving parts is very important in reducing friction and wear, improving performance and lifetime and enhancing heat dissipation. The use of lubricants in ultra high vacuum (UHV) environments has been a great challenge. This is because, the low pressure in vacuum systems and high baking temperature alter the property of lubricants. The successful team will work closely with PPPL scientists, engineers, and vacuum technicians on the design and testing of new lubricants. Development of the lubricants will occur at the home institution of the team and testing of their performance under vacuum will occur at PPPL.


In 2010 - 2011, PPPL partnered with Professor Mohsen Mosleh and his students from Howard University.  The results were presented at the American Physical Society’s Division of Plasma Physics meeting.
